What is Winter Guard?
Winter Guard is the Color Guard competition season. This is all indoors in high school gymnasiums. Usually it is just color guards teams competing against each other, sometimes there are drumline competitions that compete at the same location, but later in the day. Bowie has 2 winter guard teams. That means that our team of 34 members will break into the 2 teams for competition season. All members will make a team, there is no x-block. They do support each other by helping with props and cheering each other on at competitions. World Guard (Advanced team) World Guard typically practices M, W, with occasional Saturday practices and competitions. This team has try-outs immediately following marching season, Usually in November. The tryouts take place at Bowie, but are judged by impartial guard folks from outside our own Bowie staff. Season begins immediately after try-outs and the schedule may be a little heavier at times to get up to skill level quickly. At certain times the practice schedule will be more than M, W, and Saturday. The season is typically from November to Mid-April. This group gets an entirely new show and new costumes. This group travels to Denton TX, by bus, for an overnight. This group will travel, by plane, to Dayton Ohio for 4 days. Fair Share – Usually $600-700, not including Dayton costs. A Guard (Beginner and Intermediate Guard) A Guard typically practices T, TH, with occasional Saturday practices and competitions. There are no try-outs for this team. This group typically uses costumes from marching season and gets an entirely new show and new choreography. You also learn weapons, such as rifle and sabre, in this guard. Fair Share – Usually $300-400 There are 2 Color Guard Circuits: Texas Color Guard Circuit (TCGC) World Guard International (WGI) |
